Independent prescribing

Independent prescribing enables optometrists to clinically assess a patient, establish a diagnosis, determine the clinical management required and prescribe where necessary.

 

Optometrists with an IP qualification are able to clinically assess a patient, establish a diagnosis, determine the clinical management required and prescribe where necessary. Now qualified, Jon may prescribe any licensed medicine (except for controlled drugs or medicines for parenteral (injected) administration) for conditions affecting the eye, and the tissues surrounding the eye, within his recognised area of expertise and competence. Jon is able to treat and prescribe medications privately for many eye conditions, whether it be a red eye (such as Conjunctivitis, Keratitis, Iritis) whether it be allergic, viral or bacterial, rather than spending many hours at A&E.
